About Dr Parker

Dr Christine Parker is Associate Professor and Reader at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne. She researches and teaches on lawyer’s ethics, regulatory enforcement and compliance, and corporate social responsibility.

She is currently working with the independent legal profession regulators in the Australian states of New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria to assess the impact of the introduction of incorporated legal practices on ethical behaviour.

Her books include The Open Corporation (2002), Just Lawyers (1999), and most recently Inside Lawyers Ethics (2007 with Adrian Evans). Christine is also the General Editor of the international journal, Legal Ethics.

Background

New South Wales was the first place in the world to allow full incorporation of legal practices. As a result the regulator is now requiring legal practices to assess and improve their management systems and culture – the first place in the world where a regulator is focusing on the management and culture of whole firms in addition to disciplining individual legal practitioners or resolving individual lawyer-client disputes.

In this talk Dr Parker will present dramatic evidence from research conducted with the Legal Services Commissioner that shows that incorporated legal practices are drastically reducing their complaints, and that self-assessment of management practices is the key to good management, reduced complaints and ethical culture.
